- What is Big Data?
Information that is useful but doesn't lend itself well for storage and processing using conventional data bases and BI tools. Some characteristics of big data:
- High volume at high velocity with high variety
- Unstructured, Structured, Semi-structured or Multi-structured, often lacking well defined schemas
- Relatively complex to analyze to bring out meaningful insights

- Most organizations have traditional BI systems that focus on facts. These systems allow business users to slice and dice facts but fall short on providing insights on why facts are the way they are. This insight resides in "Big Data" which may be a combination of documents, log files, emails, social networks, blogs etc. By tapping into these insights, organizations can gain significant competitive advantage by being more agile and efficient.

- Tipping Point : Drop in compute, storage and network costs made the information more valuable than the cost to store and process it. Combined with the advent of grid computing , one now has an economic rationale for storing and processing "big data".
